The Story
Growing up, my mom and I were always the ones to do the baking for the holidays. We would also bake for close friends and family on special occasions. I left Maryland to attend UNLV for Hotel Administration, but whenever I was home to visit, we would be right back in the kitchen. After school, I stayed in Las Vegas and accepted a position as a F&B Manager for MGM Grand. Then, in 2010 I got the call - Mom has breast cancer. I did what anyone would do, I dropped everything and moved 3,000 mi back across the country. My mom is a fighter, and let me tell you, she fought. And she survived. Before I knew it, she was taking cake orders for us. We did a few wedding cakes, a few bar mitzvah cakes... and I guess word started to spread. All of a sudden we are getting calls from friends of friends, acquaintances of acquaintances; and Chesapeake Baykers was born. My mom and I have always made a great team in the kitchen. People have told us it almost looks like a dance; the way one of us is running to the mixing bowl, as the other is zipping by to check the oven. As the years have past, I have taken over most of the responsibilities, and my mom has taken some well deserved time to spend in the garden (her other passion). But make no qualms about it, she is still a big part of the company, and her stamp of approval only comes after each product passes a test of stringent guidelines... and a little quality control. In 2016, as we were planning my wedding, once again tragedy struck, and we found out that my (now) husband's mom had cancer. So, finding myself in a familiar situation, we did what anyone would do, we cancelled our big Annapolis wedding and moved 3,000 mi across the country to California. My parents flew in a week early and my mom got to baking (in my husband's Aunt's kitchen). We threw together a beautiful intimate backyard wedding in 3 weeks. Yes, it can be done. My mom made my wedding cake, along with all of the desserts. And as you can see in the pictures, I was in there with her piping borders and decorating the cake, in my dress, in between our first dance and my dad's speech. My husband and I lived in Los Angeles for a year to be closer to his family. During that time I worked at Duff Goldman's Charm City Cakes West/CakeMix. I learned a lot during my time there, and I'm thrilled to be able to bring those skills back with me to Chesapeake Baykers. So, here we are, back in Annapolis, where it all begin.
